Whittier Presbyterian Church participates in the Interfaith Council's Cold Weather Shelter by taking two one-week shifts per year. The shelter moves from church to church each week for a six month period. In our case, the food is provided by other churches or organizations, like Hillcrest Congregational Church in the above photos. The work of coordinating and maintaining the shelter while it is at our church is done by Tom & Shirley Howard.
The Interfaith Council has been running the shelter since 1987, after the Whittier Earthquake destroyed some of the low cost housing and single room occupancy hotels in Whittier. The First Day, One Stop Center, provides social services, shelter screening and offers some of the shelter participants an opportunity to get their lives off the street and out of the shelter.
Donations towards the expenses of running the shelter can be made to the church, earmarking them for the Homeless program.
