How Can I Help??

Has that ever been your response when you have heard about the latest disaster to hit somewhere in the world?

Whittier Presbyterian Church has one answer.  That answer is through our program called “Compassion Opportunities.” an opportunity to reach out in compassion to wherever the need may be.

Through this program we have responded to the famine in Ethiopia, the fires in New Mexico, hunger in Africa, and most recently the earthquakes in El Salvador and India.

Here's our Compassion Opportunities Board, which we circulate around the church.

Here's a quote from Henri J. M. Nouwen, a renowned spiritual writer from the last couple of decades, on this need to respond to stay spiritually healthy:  “the more I think about the human suffering in our world and my desire of offer a healing response, the more I realize how crucial it is not to allow myself to become paralyzed by feelings of impotence and guilt.”  This opportunity to respond is one way not to be paralyzed by those feelings.

What we have done already, since May, 2000:

Appeal Amount raised
Ethiopian Famine $282
New Mexico fires $298
Hunger in Africa $35
Church World Service blankets  2000 $775(155 blankets)
El Salvador Earthquake $795
India Earthquake $748
Terrorist Attack Response $1284
Church World Service blankets, 2001

Church World Service blankets, 2002

$785 (157 blankets)

$670 (134 Blankets)

One of the important points to realize is that you can be assured that your money will be more efficiently used than through ANY other means of aid.  We have no overhead as all the personnel are already in place that do this work.  So the great majority of your contribution will go into direct aid.

The question is often asked when we hear of tragedies, “Where is God?” or “How can a loving God let that happen?”  Some such questions have no answers.  But one answer that has been given is that God works through the compassion of human beings.  Here is a way for you to participate.
